I have just finished the pre release copy of John Brown's new book ' North of Watford Gap'. What a complete joy. From the hectic streets of Manchester to the serene Yorkshire Dales, or the beautiful Holy Island, he unpicks the myths and pre-conceivd ideas about northern life. Each chapter peels away a little of the veneer to leave you wanting more.
Based on his previous works, I wondered whether he would apply the same ironic style that he used so well in 'Return to Oz' ? I needn't have worried , for you don't have to turn many pages to find some obscure fact, wrapped up in a chuckle. i particularly likeked the chapter on Liverpool - simply great !

The principle activity of the book take place, as the title suggests, in Scotland. Had I read the previous cycling book by this author, I would have had more of a clue as to his companion for the trip. Because it would take away the primary element of the book , I shan't disclose the identity - you'll have to read it to find out. However Mike does pop along at a fair old lick and if you like heather-strewn scenery and brooding glens, this could be the read for you. Always active in his quest for the next point of interest, I felt exhausted for him. The end result is, I now know a lot more about the Scots in particular and Scottish life in general. An interesting read with enough twists and turns to keep you turning the pages.
